The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was created by Congress in 1968 to make low cost flood insurance available to property owners in flood-prone communities. In return, communities agree to guide future floodplain development. The City of Catoosa has participated in the program since 1976.
To meet the responsibility of floodplain development, cities and counties that participate in the program must adopt and enforce a floodplain development ordinance that meets the requirements of the NFIP. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides the community with Flood Insurance Rate Maps delineating the base flood risk zones.
The City of Catoosa Flood Insurance Rate Maps date from 1987 and 1988.
FEMA has undertaken an initiative to modernize National Flood Insurance Rate Maps nationwide. As part of that map modernization process, they have prepared Preliminary copies of the Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps and Flood Insurance Studies for our community. Paper maps can be reviewed by the public at City Hall. See Maggie Jacobsen, 266-0804. To review maps online click on the link below.
The map modernization process began nearly three years ago and we are now in the review period. This is the period where appeals and protests that have been submitted to FEMA are resolved. FEMA will respond to appeals and protests before making a Final Determination. New floodplain maps will become effective approximately six months later.
